EYFS

We provide learning experiences in EYFS that are happy, active, exciting, fun and safe; whilst supporting the children's learning, development and care.

All children in Borrowdale School learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside (whatever the weather!), and this starts in EYFS. We work in small groups, so we can plan activities which are suited to your child's unique needs and interests. We know that children learn best if they are excited and engaged by the content, and get absorbed in the learning, which is why the children are at the heart of everything we do. This means the direction for our planning often changes in the moment and gets adjusted to make the most of opportunities to stimulate learning in the 7 areas below.

7 areas of learning and development.

In EYFS, children will learn skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through the 7 areas of learning and development.

The prime areas of learning are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. They are:

  • Communication and language;
  • Physical development; and
  • Personal, social and emotional development.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 other, specific areas. They are:

  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the world; and
  • Expressive arts and design
