Maths

Maths is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary in most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically and a see of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
At Borrowdale we encourage our pupils to see mathematics as a creative subject which can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder. We believe that in an age of rapidly developing technology, confidence and an understanding of mathematical concepts are more important. Therefore mathematical thinking equips our pupils better for their future than merely learning technique.
We teach mathematics so that children:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to solve problems.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
We base our maths curriculum on the White Rose Maths scheme and resources to support the children's learning. We believe that our highly structured approach to teaching Maths deepens the understanding of all children.
Each lesson is based around an ‘anchor task’ which the children explore using different methods. The children are encouraged to talk about their maths and explore their ideas fully. This may be very different to the way in which you were taught yourself.

Maths at home
The links and videos below will give you ideas about how you are able to support your child's learning in a fun way at home. By giving your children the sort of support suggested below, you will enable the children to link their learning to real experiences, making it easier for them to understand their maths. By sharing time with them, you will enrich the children with improved mathematical language, making it easier for them to understand new concepts.
